Hello Models!!!
Welcome to your Second Judging Session. Based on the poll's result, Tom C, Taylor & Eric are the favorite to leave the competition tonight. Let's start the judging.
AARON - THE DORK
Nico: Aside from the weird red hues, I really like this photo! This is the perfect example of a dork, the character that fills the shoes of the goofball (if there is not on present in the sitcom). You are like spiderman hanging off the wall with nerdy comic books every where. The setting is great! I do wish the shot was more close up though... from what I can see, you do need to work on the face modelling. Good work again
Jensen: I almost love this. I like the setting. Your pose is fun while you're still modeling. Your expression seems kind of dorky but you're far away and covered in shadows that I'm kind of not enjoying it like I want to. Work on that part of your modeling and we'll get along just fine
Ru:You have an interesting and hard to pull off pose here. But I'm going to be the harsh one here. I feel the lighting takes away from the picture a great deal. Though the pose is good, it's really the face that's letting this picture down. As a comic book nerd, I feel there probably could be a bit more interaction, but it's still a creative approach to the theme. If we work down to what you're wearing, it's really nice, but it's too cool for something a comic book nerd would wear.
Chris: I like this... You embody 'The Dork' so well. I love the comic books as the prop. And I kinda like the way you climb the book shelf to show how passionate you are for the comic books. Overall, I think you did a good job.
Neil: It's nice that Nico immediately brought up Spiderman since that was my immediate thought when I saw this. I'm also fine with that "weird red hue" since we're dealing with a comic book theme here. You're giving us nice angles, but I'm not 100% sold on the modeling here. Part of it feels a bit amateurish and I don't particularly love the scale of this shot. I feel that full-body shots are better served if the photo itself is large and that tight shots are the ones that should be a bit smaller. The theme is done well-enough here and without having seen the other shots, I think you'll be fine with this.
DOUGLAS - THE SAGE
Nico: I can sort of see sage here, but your age shows through and the sage is known for being the older, more mature advice giver. I could actually see this being more "the square" than anything else. A description would have helped this photo out a lot. Modelling wise this is great... I don't like your lips, but everything else works, from the fashion to the body positioning. A shot in colour would help this out too... next time work a little more on theme connection... other than that, great work.
Jensen: This is really good. I like the setting, the colouring, the styling. Your outfit is very older and mature fashion. Your face is gorgeous here. Your right hand seems a bit too clenched for my liking, makes the whole thing seem like you're uncomfortable which is a contrast to the rest of you which seems relaxed lol Very nice.
Ru: I'm going to disagree with Nico saying the sage is a more mature (as in older) character. There are examples where the sage is in a character of the same age, for example, Itsuki from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Why, I'm the sage in my series, RuPaul's Drag Race, which is available on iTunes and LogoTV, but also has its sixth season premiering on LogoTV at 9PM Eastern/Pacific on LogoTV, and I'm the youngest on there! Especially compared to my galpal, Michelle Visage.
Shameless plugging aside, I see this very reminiscent to something I submitted elsewhere recently for the same theme and archetype. And it did well for me. And I feel it's working almost as well for you. I'm loving the coat, and your face. A small qualm with your right hand on the arm of the chair. The clenched hand isn't working, and would definitely work better unclenched and relaxed. Up to your face again, or rather, you neck, it's completely lost. Small things that only a trained eye would notice, so don't worry too much.
Chris: I think it would be better if you manage to explain your photo here. But I still can see the Sage here. You look like you are the mature one in this photo. I love the pose and the modeling in this photo is perfect. I see a model but at the same time, you manage to execute the theme so well.
Neil: I can see a Sage here. To me, it's all about your demeanor and you have it. I think the lukewarm reaction you're getting is due in part to people feeling like The Sage would be an older character and that you're not going to fit that mold due to age alone. However, while the Sage is most often older, I do feel it could work with a younger character under the right circumstances. You've met the theme well-enough for me. I also like what you're wearing and how your hair is styled. I'm not a fan of the angles your face/head is giving us. A little too big and severe in certain parts.
ERIC - THE BULLY
Nico: Two things... first is that this photo should definitely be resized to message board style as its really large... second... this shot feels way too cropped. I don't like that your head is cut off and that I can't see your whole body. From what I can imagine, this is a decent bully shot, as it has that sort of badass attitude. It's a little too plain, and a setting or props would have worked much better for this shoot. Good luck!
Jensen: I have to agree with Nico here on the size and the cropping. I love your profile for sure. It's gorgeous. You have a very distinct look but that profile is very amazing for me. I dont' really see bully. Your expression is lacking the oomph needed to be a bully. I see your reasons for feeling this way but I grew up in the 80s, everyone wore leather coats lol
Ru: Size is always an issue. Believe me. Most of the time, the bigger the better, but you will RU the day you make RuPaul say "It's too big!" The pose is good for me, and the fashion really dictates the type of person you were going for, but it's all lost in the face. It seems vacant, not mean or vindictive. Maybe a little bit conniving, but that's really subtle. For me the pose and fashion with that face doesn't really match up.
Chris: I can see a Bully in this photo. But in a sitcom context? I don't think it's suitable for the sitcom. But at least you manage to portray a bully in this photo. You look so gorgeous though and your fashion sense is great. I want to see you more.
Neil: What I have to say here has already been covered. Sizing and cropping are both issues here. Full-body shots with settings are best served with large photos while tight shots don't need to be as large. I can see you as a bully here, but I'm not sure I'd see you as part of the main cast with this shot. I feel like you'd be an occasional antagonist, or a one-off character. It's also slightly plain, but you still look good in the shot.
HUGH - THE SQUARE
Nico: I'm not sure if i'm getting the square vibes from this but it is a decent and funny pic... Maybe a description would have worked better for you here to get a feeling of what you were thinking. It's just a little too boring to me, modelling wise and theme wise. Good luck!
Jensen: Hmmmm you're damn cute that's for sure. I'm not sure I get square. Your expression sells square but then the bird on your head just kind of hmmmmm I don't know how to feel right now
Ru: When I think of the square, my mind goes almost immediately to the matriarchs of popular sitcoms: Marge Simpson, Debra Barone, Lois Griffin. Even to some male examples, like Frasier Crane or Maxwell Sheffield. When we think of the stick, we think Sheldon Cooper, Niles Crane, C.C. Babcock, Hank and Pat MacDougall. The latter tend to be more characters that are not easily amused and serious. With that in mind, this definitely overlaps between the two, but for me leans more towards the stick end, just for the fact you're not amused or phased by the bird contemplating doing its business on your head. It's sort of there though, so I'll give you that. Briefly, overall, fashion, modelling, etc. The picture to me comes off as bland.
Chris: I'm going to disagree with all the judges. The first thing that came to my mind when I see this photo is Ted from How I Met Your Mother. And I think Ted is more 'Square' than 'Stick' because he's more like a central character in that show. So I really love this photo. Love the birds. I think you manage to convince me that this photo can be used for a Sitcom.
Neil: This definitely reads as Square to me. The Square tends to be the most normal character on the show and the craziness happens around him and to him. In this shot, you look like a completely normal guy with something unusual happening to him (the bird landing on your head). I think it was a smart way to take an archetype is could be difficult to make interesting and you made an interesting shot while staying true to your character. Physically, I like your piercing eyes and your body language is appropriate. I think a full-body shot of this would have been better, but your work with what you've got.
MACKLEMORE - THE GOOFBALL
Nico: First of all this photo is too large... when uploading it through your hosting website, make sure you make the photo message board size. I really think this shot could have been cropped too.. Theme wise I really like this... even though it is very white, it is clearly intentional. Your expression isn't as carefree or funny as the goofball would have, but the setting and definitely amusing. The lack of a neck is also a little bothering. Work on your expression! Good luck!
Jensen: It is large, but you could have done quite a bit of cropping before resizing. So much unneeded space there. I think this is almost perfect. I love the setting and everything. Your expression is just so blah. Otherwise, this is again, almost perfect
Ru: Another boy who is too big for RuPaul. Please boys, don't make me say that again. I feel so dirty and pathetic admitting it. I'm going to echo Jensen. Strong setting and clothing, but a lot of unneeded space, and an expressionless face. That is a big problem for being a goofball
Chris: I like the setting. I think it helps you a lot. And the way you interact with the props is good. I'm not sure I really like the whiteness in this photo. And I have to agree with the judges on your expression. I think face expression is really important when you try to portray a Goofball.
Neil: I don't think you could have cropped too much of this shot without losing the impact of the setting, but I do agree that it is a bit too large since I have to scroll to see the whole image. I like the all-white styling and I love the thought behind the photo. I have to agree that the expression doesn't read goofball and being able to see a little neck would have been nice, but the Goofball comes through in the overall feel of the photo, so I'm sure you'll do fine.
MARK - THE SAGE
Nico: I can definitely see you as the advice giver of the sitcom in this shot... the older business type that is willing to be a mentor to the group. Modelling wise, I find it very boring... it doesn't have that "wow" factor. It's just a very simple and bland shot... but the theme connection works and that is very important. Good luck
Jensen: You're so dreamy. Just because you're older doesn't mean you have to be the Sage you know lol But I see it. It's a good shot.
Ru: Echoing Nico, it does look like the advice giver in a sitcom, but it is very boring. Echoing Jensen, just because you're older, doesn't mean you have to be the sage. Marie Barone was the bully. Captain Peacock and Hyacinth Bucket were the stick. There's not much to say, which can be a good thing, or a bad thing. In this case, it's not a good thing.
Chris: What's wrong with being older? I like older man I think you portray 'The Sage' really well. The styling fits 'The Sage' for me. I think Douglas' photo was too intense so that's why I think I like you more for a sitcom. However in term of the modelling, he did better than you. So you need to work on that.
Neil: I thought this was The Square when I first saw it, but I could see it working as The Sage, too. I can see a character coming through here and the semi-formal dress, but a bit disheveled is a nice touch. I'm going to have to echo the sentiment that this is a little plain for a modeling competition, but works well-enough for a sitcom character shot.
MICHAEL - THE GOOFBALL
Nico: This is great Michael! I love action shots and I can definitely see a goofball here... Your quirky happy-go-lucky attitude is perfect for the theme. I also like the suitcase and matching bow tie... plus the colours! The only cons I have with this shot are the lack of a neck and the weird mouth... A smile would have made this so much better. Great work!
Jensen: This made me lol In my head anyway lol This fits the theme one hundred percent and you're modeling while you're goofing around. I really like this a lot. Great job.
Ru: Very much the goofball, however, I feel you don't have enough drag make up on to pull off this face. Pose is great, as are your clothes. It's really the face and neck area that are doing the problems here.
Chris: I love this. Yeah, I don't see a neck but I'm going to forgive you for that cause you nailed it for the Goofball. Great job, Michael. Keep it up!!!
Neil: This round is so much better than your first. I love that you're giving us an action shot since it can often be so hard to find those types of shots and also find the right time to use them. Your action is a lot of fun and your expression is so completely fitting. Great job.
PENN - THE GOOFBALL
Nico: This is much better than last weeks Penn! Very quirky and goofy... I wish there was more of a setting, but the prop helps immensely... I'm still not completely into the expression, but it works. Good job this week
Jensen: Oh I agree with Nico. But if this were like, a promotional shot, this would be way so freaking perfect. I like this a lot. Very good job!
Ru: If I see this as a promotional picture, I'd get you're the goofball. Some great angles are created on your face, and the right amount of expression so you don't border on the ugly-ugly line, but more on the model-ugly line. It's quirky, but at the same time, I'm left wanting more.
Chris: Just when I thought, Michael nailed the Goofball, here comes your photo. I love it!!! Definitely perfect for a promo shot for The Goofball in a sitcom. I love the angle of your face. Gorgeous!!!
Neil: I remember this from your Photobooth example in your game. It's definitely a very fitting shot for your character. Your Burger King crown is a nice touch and I see a fun and likable character here. Nico may not like your expression, but I do; very fitting.
TAYLOR - THE CHARMER
Nico: I don't know how I feel about this... It does have some charming qualities, but i'm not completely sold. I really dislike that we can't see your neck... it almost looks as if your face has been plastered onto another persons body. The old-fashionedness is attractive but the shot as a whole is not my favourite. Good luck!
Jensen: Again, I agree with Nico. I actually thought your thing was Sage until I got to your description. I'm not sure what to add that Nico hasn't said already.
Ru: I'm liking the styling a lot here, but your face, neck and hand are huge problems for me, taking away from all aspects of the picture. I don't know about you, but I like to be wooed by men with empty bowels. You, on the other hand, look like you need a good douching before you can do any charming.
Chris: I don't know why but I feel like you head disconnects from your body here. The angle looks weird. But thank you for letting us know that you're referring to Barney for your photo. So I get the suit. I think you can do better than this.
Neil: I like that you tried to tie this shot to a well-known Charmer archetype in Barney, but I'm not sure it was fully successful, for my tastes. The suit is a nice touch, but I feel like the whole vibe could have been taken a bit further. Your expression is also a little too severe. Also, be mindful moving forward of your image sizes. Much smaller than 400x400 and judges tend to start complaining about it being too small (as a rule of thumb, I like to stay between 400x440 and 900x900). Still, since this is a tight shot, the size isn't an issue here since we still get to see everything we need to see.
TOM C - THE WISECRACKER
Nico: This definitely has qualities of a wisecracker... modelling wise, there isn't much to see. I dislike that your hand is covering most of your face and that you have glasses on hiding your eyes. I would've liked a full body picture with more of a setting for this theme... what you have does the job... but does it have the 'wow' factor? Unfortunately not. Good luck
Jensen: hmmmm I want to like this. For those comedies that kids can't watch lol It's fun and I get it. I love your smile here. But I'm just not really feeling this.
There are qualities for the theme here, but for other things we look for, they definitely are not present. When the judges are silent or have little to say, it's usually a bad thing. For me here, it is.
Chris: I think your photo fits your choice as The Wisecracker but in term of the modelling there's nothing that we can say. It was too close. I think if you zoom out this photo a little bit, it would be better.
Neil: Like the other judges have already touched upon, this fits the choice in character, but the modeling content suffers for it. A lot of your face is covered here by both the sunglasses and your hand. To make up for that, it would have been nice to get something from your body here to compensate.
TOM H - THE DORK
Nico: This photo is so quirky and fun... all the qualities of a goofball... but you chose dork. Since the spots for that filled up so quickly, I can see why you chose dork though as they are also the comic relief in the sitcom... Which I can totally see here.. maybe not so much the dorky side (the proper suit helps), but definitely the comic side. I really like the modelling here and the props just make this great! Even though there is no setting, the suitcases help get the idea across very easily. Great work Tom!
Jensen: I thought JGL was back for a moment there. I think you really look like him here lol Dorks can be goofballs too IMO. I like this. Like with Nico, there's so much working for this and that's awesome.
Nico: Back off, he's mine! j/k haha JGL will always have a special place in my heart in this series.. him and Jensen have a long history
Jensen: Which we ended up loving each other because of it <3
Ru: Then I came along and ruined it all. It's too "Basil Fawlty" for it to be a dork, and strays too far into goofball territory for me. Apart from that discrepancy, I'm liking the whole package in this picture on its own if I throw the theme out the window. Theme is only the larger main issue for me.
Chris: I'm leaning towards The Goofball as well. But I still can see The Dork in this photo especially from your styling. I like this photo more than your last week. So good for you. Great job, Tom
Neil: I can see this working for the Dork. It's a nice, fun shot and now that I see people have brought up JGL, yeah, I see the resemblance. This is a type of shot we could normally expect to see from him and keeping a good humor about your shots can definitely serve you well in the competition. Back to this week, you've definitely made ranking hard for me since there are a couple people I want at the top and you're in the running.
USHER - THE CHARMER
Nico: I can definitely see the Casanova side of this charming character... you are a player and you know how to work it. I dislike that it's a studio shot, but the hands help show what you are going for.. I can totally see the "Barney" qualities. I do think the modelling could be much better as your expression is sort of bland and you are just standing there... aside from that, this is another good week from you. good work
Jensen: I dont' really mind the studio shots because they're almost like promos for real shows. I like this a lot. Charmer, yes you are!!! Sexy and all that. This is really good.
Ru: Contrary to what I've told others, I want this to be bigger. Even the boys want you in this picture, although that looks like it could be the hand of an old man. I'd watch out, Usher, some of those older gentlemen are into really weird things. For me, overall, the picture works. Size aside, I agree with Nico about your face. I think if it were 10% lustier, it'd be a home run.
Chris: Usher, I love this. I definitely can see Barney here. I think if you play with your expression, it would be better. But it's a very solid photo from you. Great job, Usher!!!!
Neil: I love the action of the shot. I love how you're fairly unaffected by the action of the shot. I just love the shot. I can see your character here and beyond the archetype itself, I can see the character itself. I would have preferred a version of this shot that showed more of your body, but beggars can't be choosers and this definitely works well enough this week.
